Greater Anglia has announced that to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day, Lowestoft railway station will host a special Service of Remembrance.
On Monday 27th January, the event includes a performance of the play ‘Suitcase 1938’ by pupils from Ormiston Denes Academy at 10 am. The performance in the Parcels Office Exhibition Space will be followed by the ceremony at 10:30 am. The Mayor of Lowestoft, Cllr Alice Taylor, will be at the service and wreath-laying ceremony.
Members of the public are welcome to attend both events. The Holocaust Memorial service will be led by Ben Parish from Lowestoft Community Church.
Lowestoft Central Station welcomed over 500 refugee children 75 years ago as part of the Kindertransport initiative when the British Government allowed temporary admission for up to 10,000 children from Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia.
What did the officials say?
The Mayor commented
“We want to remember and reflect that even in the darkest of circumstances, there are shining examples of what is best in the human spirit”.
