On the 15th of December 2019, East Midlands Railway and Network Rail opened the extended car park at Market Harborough Station.
The extension adds a further 200 parking spaces to the existing carpark, bringing the total spaces above 500.
This is due to the Midland Mainline upgrade scheme, which is set to complete next year.
More upgrades are planned for the station, including upgraded toilets, a waiting room on platform one and a new, longer platform 2, which is being extended by Network Rail, to allow longer trains to call at the station.
Network rail has also straightened the tracks through the station, to allow trains to pass through the station at higher speeds. A new footbridge and lifts have also been recently installed, to make both platforms fully accessible.
What did the officials say?
Gavin Crook, Principal Programme Sponsor for Network Rail, said:
“The opening of this car park will see the number of spaces available for passengers vastly increase, making travelling to and from the station much easier.
“A vast amount of work has taken place at Market Harborough station, which is providing real benefits. We’d like to thank station users for their patience whilst this work took place.”
Neil Grabham, Customer Service Director for East Midlands Railway, said:
“We have been working alongside Network Rail to deliver a vastly improved Market Harborough station and we are really pleased that the new larger customer car park is now open.
“The additional 200 car park spaces will greatly benefit our passengers that travel to and from the station and we would like to thank our passengers for their patience whilst the improvement works have been taking place”.
