The British Transport Police has announced that a Swansea officer has won the Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) of the year award at a prestigious awards ceremony.

The win was announced at British Transport Police’s ‘Make the Difference’ awards held in London on Friday 1 November.

Bethan was nominated by her colleagues and was selected from hundreds of PCSOs across the UK.

British Transport Police Community Support Officers provide a visible and reassuring presence in railway environments across Wales, England and Scotland.

Bethan James has worked for British Transport Police for five years after being inspired by her father.

Bethan was also one of the first to the scene of the tragic incident in Port Talbot in July when two railway workers were fatally struck by a train.

What did the officials say?

Simon Turton, Head of Crime, Security and Counter Terrorism at Transport for Wales, said:

“Bethan has worked tirelessly with the station management team to address the anti-social behaviour issues around her patch and has come up with some great initiatives.”

Benjamin Randall-Webb, Sergeant at British Transport Police, said:

“Our PCSOs are the foundation of neighbourhood policing and the Swansea community are very lucky to have Bethan.

“She quickly earnt her place at the heart of the community and her friendly, approachable and professional manner has gained the trust and respect of her colleagues, industry partners and the public.”

Speaking of her win, Bethan said:

“I am thrilled to have been recognised for my contribution to British Transport Police. I have learnt a lot during my time as a PCSO, working closely with the railway, South Wales Police and many other partner agencies has been fantastic.

“Having the opportunity to help people is my favourite part of the job and incredibly rewarding – whether it’s directing people to their train or supporting someone during their most vulnerable moments.

“I am looking forward to my future with BTP and building on my experiences to continue to help others.”
