Nick Simpson, over at the Grosmont M.P.D – The Original Facebook group has released an update on steam locomotive 75029 The Green Knight.
The BR Standard 4 has now been moved on to ‘Two Road’ at Grosmont MPD ready for its overhaul to start.
The positioning move saw the green Standard 4 shunted into the workshop by BR Green Class 08 No. 08556, one of the resident shunters at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
75029’s boiler had already been moved a few weeks prior to the locomotive moving into the workshop.
Next steps for the locomotive will see work on the frames recommence.
The driving wheelset horns will be riveted back on next. These horns were removed previously due to corrosion that had built up between them and the frames. This had lead to distortion, so important to fix.
After this work is completed, the locomotive will be lifted up into the air to remove the bogies for exam and overhaul (if needed).
The thinking is that the frames are in good condition, so all being well, work on the frames will be measurement, exam and repainting.
Whilst this work is ongoing, the rods, bearing and cranks will be measured, tested for cracks and will be examined.
This is excellent news to hear, and we look forward to bringing you updates as they come in.
