Network Rail has announced that the overhead power lines on the eastern side of Manchester Victoria station are now live.
NR has electrified the line from Miles Platting Junction into platforms 1 and 2 at Manchester Victoria station.
The work is part of the Great North Rail Project.
By electrifying the railway, it now means that there are more options to route trains, providing passengers with more reliable journeys.
Now the power has been switched on, Network Rail is reminding residents not to trespass on the railway, which now carries 25,000v of electricity.
What did the officials say?
Joe Haynes, scheme project manager at Network Rail, said:
“Safety is our priority and we are informing local people about the overhead line equipment which is used to power trains.
“Once installed, electrified wires are always switched on – even when there are no trains passing. They carry 25,000 volts of electricity, which can be fatal. Our message is simple – never trespass on the railway for any reason.”

That exactly it. The 319’s that cover the Via Bolton (recently electrified section) and the Lime Street services,
cannot yet access Newton Heath depot. They are based at and serviced at Allerton (Liverpool) and its intended
to stable 319’s overnight in Victoria. Dont ask me why it’s all a bit a… about face, but all so typical of our GREAT ?
North Rail Project. To Andrew, patience is needed ( lots I should say) as Stalybridge is on the Leeds route that is
supposed to be next. Just a footnote – while we have got some 319’s through Bolton on Preston to Manchester
Airport services, it was useful over Easter, as we had diverted Pendolinos for the first time ever under their
own power.’

What’s the purpose of electrifying platforms 1 and 2, when there are no electrified routes to the west? Is it just to stable an empty unit?
That’s brilliant news. Also why not electrify to Stalybridge and replace the overhead wires on the Ardwick-Glossop & Hatfield line as Network Rail are replacing overhead wires in on the GEML in East London & the Southend Victoria Line in Essex.
Which the line itself was part of the Woodhead Line that went from Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield Victoria.
