WATCH: 45596 Bahamas steaming through Derbyshire heading home

Tuesday 5th February 2019 saw LMS Jubilee No. 45596 Bahamas head home to the KWVR (Keighley & Worth Valley Railway) from Tyseley Steam Trust.

This day saw the Jubilee head through places such as Birmingham, Tamworth, Burton on Trent, Ilkeston, Alfreton, Chesterfield, Rotherham and Leeds.

After being postponed many times, Bahamas finally returned home for the first time since 2013 and ran on the KWVR in Steam for the first time since 1997.

With a successful return home Bahamas can haul her inaugural run from the KWVR to Carlisle over the Settle & Carlisle Railway and return on the 9th February 2019 and her second tour over the S&C to Carlisle on the 16th February 2019.

RailView filmed Bahamas at Willington, Derbyshire, located north of Burton on Trent and south of Derby, passing through 4 minutes early at 12:02 and Chesterfield, Derbyshire at arriving 6 minutes late at 13:23 and departing 2 minutes late at 13:27.

Info about 45596 Bahamas:

  • Designed by Sir William Stanier
  • Built by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow in 1934
  • In 1961 Bahamas was modified to carry a double chimney to improve performance 
  • Withdrawn from BR in 1966
  • Purchased directly from BR for preservation by the Bahamas Locomotive Society in 1967 who is her current owners
  • Overhauled back to working condition at the Dinting Railway Museum
  • Returned to the mainline in the 1970s 
  • Taken off of the mainline in 1994 due to her mainline ticket expiring
  • She last ran in 1997 on the KWVR
  • For fifteen years she spent her time on display at Ingrow West & Oxenhope museums on the KWVR as well as at the National Railway Museum in York
  • In 2013 she moved to Tyseley Locomotive Works where her overhaul would take place for 5 years
  • She returned to steam in September 2018 also running at Tyseley’s 50th Anniversary Open Weekend
  • In January 2019 she returned to the mainline for the first time since 1994
  • She is the only Jubilee with a double chimney in preservation
