The GWR County Project has released a couple of updates on the progress made on their project to build steam locomotive 1014 County of Glamorgan.
The group had a period of change for their suppliers. The two barrel sections for the boiler have been delivered to Heritage Boiler Steam Services in Huyton, Liverpool. HBSS has been set up by the team that worked on the firebox at L&NWR Heritage in Crewe.
The firebox has also been moved from Crewe to HBSS and the group are now in discussion with them on the next stages of boiler work which is hoped to progress in the new year.
Meanwhile, the group are about to place an order for the smokebox and saddle for the front end of the locomotive.
On the fundraising side of the project, the group have raised an approximately a quarter of the £125,000 to complete the boiler. If you would like to contribute to the fund, please click here.
On the running progress side, there has been little happening since last month. However, there was a brilliant day had on Saturday.
With the help of Pete Gransden, the group managed to roll the final two sheets of the front-running board and have half bolted one site to pull it into shape.
A member of the team, Dicky Boast, will be travelling to the Midlands this week to issue the order for the front end, this being a smokebox, saddle, door and ring for the locomotive.
He will also be enquiring into the provision of the plates for the tender tank.
In the next two weeks, it is hoped that the rear axle will be fitted and the centre one lowered. This will then mean that the group can then lower the front one which will leave the underside clear to fit the springs and brakes.
