The Watercress Line (Mid Hants Railway) has announced that GWR steam locomotive 5199 will be visiting them for their Autumn Steam Gala.
The Autumn Steam Gala will be being held on the 19th-21st October 2018 and already sees GWR ‘Manor’ No.7822 ‘Foxcote Manor’ visiting.
5199s visit is thanks to the Llangollen Railway (where 7822 is resident).
Mid Hants Railway’s gala will feature an intensive timetable, with both passenger and freight trains featuring.
2018s visit also marks the first time that 5199 will visit the Mid Hants Railway, having never visited before.
A brief history of No.5199
No.5199 was built in Swindon in 1934, she is a member of the 5101 class introduced in 1929 by C.B. Collett to replace Churchward’s 3101 class. Initially, she entered service whilst based at the Tyseley shed before having stints at Stourbridge, Wolverhampton, and Gloucester Horton Road before being withdrawn.
In 1985, the locomotive was purchased by the Great Western Locomotive Group and moved to Toddington shed at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway – however, the group broke up so the restoration wasn’t complete. In 1988 she moved to the Llangollen Railway, but in 1990 she moved to Long Marston due to it being closer to the members of the group.
2003 came and saw 5199 enter service at the Llangollen Railway and has been in steam ever since.
