The General Steam Navigation Locomotive Restoration Society has been busy as always and has ordered further new parts to bring steam locomotive 35011 “General Steam Navigation” one step closer to returning to steam.

Trailing Truck Components

An order has been placed with a contractor to produce a pair of spring beams. The beams are the final components needed to be able to restore the trailing truck to full working condition.

Modern construction techniques have allowed new methods of building the springs beams, in this case, the use of water jets over forging.

The advantage for the Society here being the cost of a water jet made spring beam being around half the price of a forged one.

Both beams are expected to be delivered later in the Summer, where along with other components, can be trial fitted on the trailing truck at some point in 2018. The dust covers for the spring beams have been completed and are now in the Society’s possession. Construction of the hangers for the springs is due to start soon as one of the Society’s volunteers has taken on the task of machining these.

The Packet

In early June the latest installment of The Packet, Issue 7, was printed and distributed out to all the members of the Society. The Packet contains all the latest information on the Society and 35011. Subscribing to the Society for only £10 a year would mean you can also receive copies of The Packet throughout the year.
