This afternoon, the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway has announced that No. 34092 ‘City of Wells’ will be visiting the line for their 50th Anniversary Gala.
As many will know, ‘Wells’ was once part of the resident fleet at the Worth Valley, until it left for the East Lancashire Railway as a visitor, only to not be able to return due to a weight limit on the bridge near Ingrow West.
The East Lancashire Railway has launched an appeal to now buy City of Wells and make the ELR its permanent home – so this is the last time you will see 34092 at the KWVR before it moves ownership.
The locomotive joins GWR Pannier Tank No. 7714 (from the Severn Valley Railway) and No. 46100 ‘Royal Scot’ (courtesy of Locomotive Services Ltd) and many more to the line up of locomotives for this gala – certainly one not to miss.
A brief history of 34092 City of Wells
City of Wells was built in Brighton in 1964 and was operated by the Southern Region of British Railways. It is an un-rebuilt class of Bulleid Pacific and has been to a variety of different railways in preservation, including the Swanage Railway.

I think you’ll find 34092 was built in 1949, not 1964.
