ScotRail has opened the new-look facilities for passengers at Dundee station, following an investment of more than £1million.

Passengers will benefit from a refurbished customer area. This makes the station a more pleasant and relaxing place to catch a train.

Lighting and flooring have been replaced on the concourse area between platforms 1 and 4. A new ceiling, modern glazing, and automatic doors to the platform make the station look upmarket and modern.

The old waiting room has now been replaced with a new lounge. The lounge is open to all customers and offers a place to relax or work in comfort.

New toilets, accessible toilets, and a baby changing facility complete the refurbishment.

As part of the work, a lounge for Caledonian Sleeper passengers is also under development.

ScotRail is responsible for the redevelopment on the platform. Dundee City Council is responsible for constructing a new station at street level. The new station includes a ticket office and hotel. New lifts and escalators are installed down to the platform level.

The project is expected to be completed by late spring 2018 ahead of the opening of the V&A Design Museum in September 2018.

Funding for these improvements has come from the Scottish Government’s Scottish Stations Fund.

What did the officials say?

Ian McConnell, the ScotRail Alliance’s programmes, and transformation director said “We’re building the best railway Scotland’s ever had, and improving our station facilities are a key part of this. This major refurbishment of Dundee station by the ScotRail Alliance is a clear sign of what’s to come as the Waterfront development progresses.”

Humza Yousaf, Minister for Transport and the Islands said “Creating welcoming, efficient stations for passengers is key to making destinations more attractive and improving overall experiences. This Scottish Government investment in Dundee station is just one part of our efforts to build the best railway network Scotland has ever had. This project shapes a gateway to the city and is an excellent example of how the industry can work in partnership with public and private sector partners to deliver to wider regeneration goals.”

Lynne Short, the convener of Dundee City Council’s city development committee, said “The newly redeveloped railway station and concourse in Dundee act as a gateway to the region via the waterfront regeneration project and this next piece of the jigsaw provides for people arriving in the city by train. The new facilities will welcome travellers and set the tone for their experience of Dundee and I am delighted that this stage is completed.”
