The East Lancashire Railway has announced that A4 Pacific, 60009 Union of South Africa is to visit the line for its Spring Steam Gala.
The steam locomotive, which is sister to the world famous ‘Mallard’ will be amongst the visitors of 45212, 45407 (disguised as 45157) and the home fleet of locomotives which will be operating an intensive timetable over the weekend of 2nd to 4th March 2018.
60009 is already at Baron Street locomotive works undergoing winter maintenance.
60009 Union of South Africa is an LNER Class A4 steam locomotive. It was built in 1937 at Doncaster Works.
The ‘A4’ was a common sight on the East Coast Mainline between London and Scotland. 60009 is one of six surviving A4s.
Not long left!
Union of South Africa only has a limited time left. In April 2019 it will be permanently withdrawn from service and will join 61994 ‘The Great Marquess’ in a museum in Fife.
