Doncaster has a strong connection with the Railways, most notably for building locomotives such as 4472 (60103) “Flying Scotsman”, 4468 (60022) “Mallard” and the original 2001 “Cock O’ The North”. at Doncaster Works (known by many Railwaymen as ‘The Plant’).

This was when Doncaster Works was the primary Locomotive construction plant for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER).

The convention is taking place on Saturday the 10th of February, with the venue being the Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery (Chequer Road, Doncaster DN1 2AE).

Drinks and Confectioneries will be served from 11.30am, with the convention starting at 12.00pm. The duration is said to be about a couple of hours.

The Talks

Five guest speakers, each covering different topics, will present talks.

The first talk will be delivered by Head of Libraries and Culture, Nick Stopforth. The basis for his talk will be the Plans Doncaster Council have for Doncaster Railway Heritage Centre. Next to follow is Roger Hallatt, Joint Managing Director of Peak Rail PLC, who will talk about motivating volunteers to support Heritage Projects.

The speaker for talk three is To Be Confirmed, but they will talk about new developments in Doncaster’s Rail Industry. John Seale, Doncaster P2 Locomotive Trust’s (DP2LT) Railway Historian, will then be up to speak. He will talk about the application of New Engineering Technologies to Heritage Railway Projects.

The final talk will be presented by the DP2LT’s Publications Consultant Paul Abell. Construction of Replica 2001 “Cock O’ The North” in the Railway Heritage Centre will be the basis of his talk.

Towards the end of the proceedings, the audience will be able to ask questions for the speakers to answers. The variety of topics cover should lead to some interesting discussions. Everyone is welcomed to attend the convention, which could be the start to Doncaster’s own Heritage Railway Centre, focusing solely on the strong ties the Railways have with Doncaster.
