Network Rail, East Midlands Trains, and have launched a campaign and website to inform every one of the major works taking place this year at Derby. The works start on Sunday 22nd July 2018.

Derby resignalling is the biggest investment for the station in decades. The improved station will see a modern and improved track layout be created.

The railway station has seen passenger numbers double in the past 20 years. The upgrade is a significant part of the upgrade to the Midland Mainline. This will help support better journeys between Sheffield, Derby, Nottingham, and London.

Derby was modernised in 2013 but the layout hasn’t been improved in nearly 50 years. The signalling hasn’t been significantly upgraded since the 1960s.

Work is already underway to build a new platform opposite platform six. This is due to open in early July.

Following on from the opening of the new platform, 79 days of engineering work will commence from the 22nd July until Sunday 7th October 2018. During this time, will be completing the following:

  • 17 kilometres of track will be replaced, a new layout installed.
  • 79 sets of points will be installed
  • 55 new signals installed
  • 9 new signal gantries installed
  • 150,000 tonnes of ballast laid
The Website

The dedicated website can be found by clicking here. It has been created to help passengers to understand the temporary changes that they will have to take as the work begins.

The site includes detailed travel advice for the stations affected. This allows passengers to select their home station and see how and when the works will impact their journey, regardless of whether they travel with or CrossCountry.

Passengers can also keep an eye on social media for #DBY2018 from today until the completion of the works in October.

No internet? No problem! Passengers can pick up a leaflet and speak to a member of staff to get the information they need.

What did the officials say?
Jo Johnson

Jo Johnson MP, Rail Minister “We are investing in the biggest modernisation programme since Victorian times, which means faster, more frequent and more comfortable services for passengers across the country. This includes the £200 million re-signalling programme in the Derby area, which will improve reliability and punctuality, and ensure the line is fit for future growth.”

Rob McIntosh

Rob McIntosh, Route Managing Director at Network Rail “This work will improve journeys in Derby and across the wider region by providing passengers with a more modern, reliable and resilient railway. This investment is vital and we have worked extremely closely with train operators, stakeholders and local businesses to keep disruption to a minimum whilst the upgrade takes place. Today marks the launch of a new website which will give passengers detailed information on how their journey is affected and allow them to plan ahead.”

Jake Kelly

Jake Kelly, Managing Director, East Midlands Trains “We are working closely with Network Rail and CrossCountry to deliver this vital project for Derby. We know how frustrated our customers feel when their train is forced to wait outside Derby for a platform or track to clear – this investment will remove these bottlenecks and help to improve journeys for the thousands of customers who travel to, from and through Derby every day.

He added “Our focus is to continue to provide an excellent service for our customers and planning is already well underway to ensure customers can continue to travel with confidence throughout this time. I would urge all customers to take a moment and pick up a leaflet, or visit our new website and understand what these temporary changes will mean to their journeys when the works get underway this July.”

Andy Cooper

Andy Cooper, Managing Director, CrossCountry “We fully understand the disruption customers can experience when engineering work takes place, so we have worked closely with East Midlands Trains and Network Rail to ensure they have access to all the information possible about how the upgrades at Derby this summer could affect their journeys. However, as well as being a source of useful travel advice, the dedicated customer website provides extensive information about why these works are taking place and the benefits customers will see when this investment in the region’s railways is complete.”
